The 2020 0.50% sulphur limit for fuel oil used outside emission control areas will undoubtedly create operational issues for crews onboard ships.
It has also been widely said that these fuels, of which the majority will be blends, may not confirm to the ISO 8217 standard.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now via its working group (ISO TC28 SC4 WG6) responsible for maintaining the ISO 8217 standard issued a letter in this regard rebutting these claims but also raising awareness of all the various operational fuel management issues that will arise from using the new 0.50% sulphur fuel blends of different origin. The letter is attached below and we encourage the letter to be distributed to all ships for their information.
